Israeli Apartheid Week 2011
==============================

Israeli Apartheid Week (actually two weeks, 6 - 20th March) is an annual international series of events held across the globe. The aim is to educate people about the nature of Israeli apartheid against the Palestinian people and to build the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement locally and globally. Last year, IAW took place in over 50 cities across the globe and this year the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign is proud to be hosting a series of events in Dublin and elsewhere.

IAW 2011 takes place following two years of incredible successes for the BDS movement on the global level. Lectures, films, and actions will highlight the many injustices that continue to make BDS so crucial in the struggle against apartheid and for justice, equality, and peace.

Below you will find a full listing of events taking place around Ireland during this year's IAW inlcuding film screenings, public meetings, a book launch, boxing fundraiser and street actions. We hope you will be able to make it along to some of them. Not all events are finalised, so please check the Israeli Apartheid Week section of our website for up to date listings - http://www.ipsc.ie/iaw2011

Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign Newsletters Empty Re: Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign Newsletters

Post by Admin Wed May 09, 2012 12:19 am

Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign - Newsletter 7th May 2012
==================

Well we\'ve finally fixed the issues with our mailing list, greetings once again!

Please see below for a number of very important upcoming events around Ireland, includng the annual protest outside the CRH annual general meeting (that time once a year when we ask you to get up early) and a wonderful cultural tour around Irelnad featuring Palestinian music and poetry.

==================

1. [Dun Laoghaire] Protest at CRH AGM: Stop Cementing Misery in Palestine!

On the morning of Wednesday 9 May Irish multinational CRH will hold their Annual General Meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign plan a highly visual photo-friendly protest outside the venue, lining the treet with hugh Paletsinian flags and a ‘human message’ spelling out “CRH: Stop Cementing Misery in Palestine”.

This is a call out to all solidarity activists to turn up on the morning and become part of a this important message along Marine Road. PLEASE TRY TO MAKE IT.

Details:

What: The AGM is on the morning of Wednesday 9th May in Dun Laoghaire.

When and where to meet: 9.30am opposite the gates of the Royal Marine Hotel on Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire

What to wear: Hopefully it will not rain but be prepared just in case. It is a windy road so bring warm clothes.

How long: 2 hours.

Who to bring: Please try to bring as many people as you can! Numbers are very important for the visual aspect of this action.

Why: The IPSC is organising this protest because CRH owns 25% of the Israeli company Mashav Initiative and Development Ltd which, in turn, owns Israel’s sole cement producer Nesher Cement Enterprises Ltd. Nesher provide up to 90% of all cement sold in Israel, including cement used in the construction of Israel’s illegal separation wall in Palestine and illegal settlements and checkpoints. We are calling on CRH to end its shameful investment in Israel and to stop profiting from the occupation of Palestine by divesting from its Israeli interests.

For the past two years the issue of CRH’s investment in Israel dominated the AGM proceedings and press coverage of the event. We want to repeat that, as CRH, like any business, do not like any negative publicity so it is vital that we highlight it.

For more about the IPSC’s CRH Divestment Campaign see: http://www.ipsc.ie/crhdivest

2. [Dublin] Vigil for Palestinian hunger strikers and prisoners

The IPSC and IAWM will hold a vigil highlighting the issue of Palestinian political prisoners on hunger strike on Thursday 10th May. Over the over 4,600 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails, currently over 2,000 are on hunger strike, eight of whom are currently in serious condition, protesting against their ill treatment by the Israeli state.

At the time of writing two prisoners, Bilal Diab and Thaer Halahla have been, on hunger strike for more than 65 days, and are now in “grave condition.”

Join us at The Spire, O’Connell St, between 6pm and 7pm on Thursday 10th May to show your solidarity.

===========

3. [Cork] Film Screening: The Land Speaks Arabic

May is the month Palestinians commemorate the 1948 Nakba. To commemorate this tragic event in solidarity with them, we are screening “The Land Speaks Arabic”, an award-winning documentary film from 2007 by Palestinian film maker Maryse Gargour on Thursday 10 May 2012 at 8pm in Solidarity Books, Douglas Street, Cork.

The film provides a rarely heard perspective on the creation of the state of Israel and the disaster that it represented for the Palestinians people. It also exposes many of the common myths and fabrications that are so often used to justify and rationalize the brutal and ongoing dispossession of Palestinian Arabs from their lands and livelihoods.
Members of Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign will be holding and attending the screening. This will begin our monthly screenings throughout the summer of movies relating to Palestine.

4. [Belfast] Mark Thomas – Extreme Rambling, book reading (CQAF & ICTU)

Location: The Black Box, 18 -22 Hill St, Belfast. Time: 8.00pm. Tickets: £10

Mark Thomas has been a performer since 1985; he has toured the UK and abroad, has made seven series of his own show for Channel 4, and worked as a comic an activist and a writer. Now also a bestselling author, with four books to his name, Mark finds a very British way to try to comprehend the Middle Eastern problem with his latest book ‘Extreme Rambling’.

During 2010 Mark decided to go rambling in the Middle East and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier, crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side. This is the story of 300,000 settlers, a 750 km wall, six arrests, one stoning, too much humus and one simple question… can you ever get away from it all with a good walk? Come and hear Mark read from his book and talk about his extreme rambling experiences

5. [Cork, Dublin, Belfast & Derry] Commemorating Al Nakba: Celebrating Palestine - Palestinian Music and poetry tour

A major tour of Palestinian and Arab artists, with some local support, is to take place in Ireland between the 17th and 20th May, featuring cultural concerts in Cork, Dublin, Belfast and Derry. Billed as “Commemorating Al Nakba; Celebrating Palestine”, the tour will feature two renowned Palestinians, poet Rafeef Ziadah and singer Terez Sliman. Also joining them will be acclaimed Lebanese-Australian singer-songwriter Phil Mansour.

The tour will take place during what Palestinians call Nakba Week, which marks the 64th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (‘Catastrophe’) which saw the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinians, forcibly uprooted from their homeland in order to facilitate the foundation of the State of Israel.

Poet Rafeef Ziadah, one of those on the bill, expressed her excitement: “This tour will be both a commemoration of the catastrophe that befell us Palestinians in 1948 and a celebration of the culture, creativity and continued resistance of the Palestinian people today; whether they reside in the 1967 or 1948 occupied territories, in refugee camps, or in the global diaspora. We are very excited about this tour and look forward to sharing our culture with Irish audiences.”

TOUR ITINERARY

The tour will visit the following locations:

Thursday 17th May - Cork: The Pavilion, Carey’s Lane, Doors 8pm. Entry €8 / €5 concession.

Friday 18th May - Dublin: The Teachers’ Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Doors 8pm. Entry €10. (Plus support from singer-songwriters Thom Moore and Joe Dunne)
